This CD of works by composer Jose Serebrier (b. 1938) includes the world premiere recording of his double bass concerto “Nueve,” with soloist Gary Karr. Originally written for Gary in 1971 as a commission from the Plainfield (NJ) Symphony in celebration of its 50th anniversary, “Nueve” is comprised of nine variations and mostly just nine notes (“Nueve” is Spanish for “nine,” and at the time he wrote it, the composer lived in a New York City on 99th street on the 9th floor of his apartment building.) The soloist is surrounded by strings on stage. Two “stealth” clarinetists are seated in the audience, where they pop up to play during the jazz variation, joined by brass players from the balcony. The soloist also reads poetry, “Prometheus Unbound” by Shelley. In this recording, acclaimed actor Simon Callow (“Four Weddings and a Funeral,” “Room with a View”) does the honors. Remarkably, Gary recorded his solo part for this CD release in his home studio in Victoria, Canada, performing virtually with the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra in the U.K. Buy “Nueve” here at the Gary Karr Store at the ISB Online Store, and then read Gary’s personal account of being in two places at once at Gary's Account
