Phillips: Traces
Theron McClure (1912-2010) was a pioneer in American musical studies. This volume brings together his seminal work, published and unpublished: in opera, especially the role of chamber opera in the American university; in the pedagogy of the double bass; and in the performance practice of the gamba and violone.
In addition to now-classic articles from journals including American String Teacher, Continuo, Instrumentalist, The International Society of Bassists, Music Journal, NATS, Opera News, and The Viola da Gamba Society of America, this volume includes Dr. McClure's ambitious summary of bass teaching methodology, Teaching the String Bass (1961) his alternately magisterial and rollicking publication for high school bassists, Ohio Bass Club News (1969-1972), and the ground-breaking journal Violone(1973-1979).
This Collection also includes previously unpublished items ranging from Dr. McClure's teaching material for the bass to explanatory essays on performance practice. The Collected Writings of Theron McClure demonstrates the remarkable scope and depths of a remarkable musician.
