Duo No. 3 for violin and double bass was written for and dedicated to Martha Walvoord and Jack Unzicker. The piece is essentially three stand-alone portraits. The vocabulary reflects my own interests and life’s work in the classical music of Europe, the Americas, and more recently, Africa. I hope the title and music of each movement may inspire, in performer and listener, meaningful personal thoughts, recollections and images. For me, each portrait reflects experiences and observations I have had with people who have been a part of my life. In a nutshell, “The Pursuit of Her Life” reflects my perspective of that beautiful and complicated dance navigated by two people who pursue their dreams in tandem, with passion and dedication. “The Love of Her Life” is about the possibility and potential of love and loss at every stage of life. “Her Dance” tries to capture the spirit and exuberance of a young artist at the threshold of great things.
