This work is like a symphony in three movements for the two instruments.
I: Bach in Cairo
II: Ancient Daze
III: Devil’s Gigue
The first movement’s original working-title was Bach on Hashish but was changed for the sake of impressionable children (and adults). When Mr. Charlton began writing this movement he wanted it to be neo-baroque, and it is. But, while composing in the downstairs computer room his wife would be teaching middle-eastern dance in her studio directly above him. That says it all.
The second movement is very neo-medieval. It is a theme with variations.
The third movement is a sprite, dramatic work with many contrasts.
